A trace in the world

4 Mar - 11 Apr 2021

Pol Pintó's paintings are seen before words are spoken. His recent works exude that almost magical quality of simplicity by which, for some mysterious reason, everything makes sense when in front of them. It all arises from a daring: that of the painter who tries to shape lines and dots, and to record their traces.

In his studio, while the artist is still engaged in this work, the sound of the impact of the chalk line onto the canvas does not cease: tas... tas... tas...

'Pol Pintó: A trace in the world' is an exhibition curated by Programa Taide in the series of projects 'Here, there and everywhere’.

"The beginnings of my artistic practice are linked to urban art.

In this medium, speed becomes essential. "

"Coping with the speed that urban art requires forced me to move away from my obsession with perfection and to find alternative tools to speed up my work.

That is how I discovered the chalking line, an instrument widely used in construction and engineering to draw straight lines. With it, beyond being able to develop my forceful geometries, I discovered all the other nuances that it brought to my work: expressiveness, inconstancy, randomness. Error, even.

It also had clear connotations that continue to define my hallmark to this day: austerity and that continuous search for the primal".

Repetition , 2021

‘Repetition' pushes the joint representation of the parallel strokes on the canvas to the limit, thus maximising the possibilities of the drawing instrument.

The repetition of the straight lines, arranged in parallel on the support, allows the juxtaposition of two readings. In the first, the work is observed at close range, the lines that make it up can be glimpsed, conveying a sensation of instability and subtle movement. From a certain distance, on the other hand, the sum of the whole acquires prominence, providing the work with atmospheric qualities.

Pol Pintó's paintings share with those by South Korean artist

Yun Hong-keun (1928-2007) a way of proceeding in which each gesture, each repetition, has no specific purpose.

They are, instead, the products of an endless routine and continuous repetition.

Like living a life.

The series of works Paisaje Vacío (Empty Landscape) explores the trace that any kind of action leaves in the world. They are, in this sense, the expression of frozen gestures on the canvas.

In these paintings, the action is executed on the sides of the support, although its trace expands over the entire surface, dominating the work.
